NDMA Warns Of Possible Flooding In River Ravi Over Next 48 Hours

Pakistan disaster management authorities have warned of possible flooding in the River Ravi over the next two days, urging communities to take precautionary measures.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) stated that its National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) had been monitoring water levels closely after continuous rain in the upper catchment areas.

According to its assessment, moderate to heavy showers in the Pir Panjal region and adjoining streams have increased inflows into Thein Dam, which has now reached nearly 86% of its capacity at 1,717 feet.

Officials noted that water releases from Thein Dam, coupled with additional runoff from streams on the Indian side, could push river levels further up. Medium to high flows are expected in several nullahs, particularly Bein, Basantar, and Deg, in the coming 24 hours.

Current readings show the River Ravi at Kot Naina discharging 64,000 cusecs. Authorities have warned that water could rise to low or medium flood levels at Jassar, with a chance of escalation if heavy rainfall persists or more spillway water is released before 27 August.

Residents in low-lying areas have been asked to stay alert, avoid unnecessary movement near riverbanks, and follow updates through official channels including TV, radio, and mobile alerts.

Local administrations may issue evacuation orders if needed, and people are urged to prepare emergency kits, safeguard valuables, and ensure livestock safety.

NDMA has instructed all provincial and district authorities to maintain readiness and ensure rapid response to any flood-related emergencies.
