Long Weekend Likely as Nation Celebrates and Remembers

Students and government employees across Pakistan are expected to enjoy a rare four-day weekend in mid-August, as two key public holidays fall back-to-back.

The break is set to begin on Thursday, August 14, which marks Pakistan’s Independence Day. Official events including flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades, and cultural performances are scheduled across the country to celebrate the occasion.

The following day, August 15, will be observed as Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain (R.A). The day is marked with deep religious significance, as processions and gatherings (Majalis) are held nationwide to pay tribute to the martyrs of Karbala.

Families are already making travel arrangements for short vacations, while others intend to spend time with loved ones or take part in community activities. Travel agencies have reported a noticeable increase in bookings for hill stations and tourist destinations.

At the same time, security agencies have been instructed to ensure safety during Independence Day festivities and religious processions on Chehlum.

Although the government is yet to issue an official notification for August 15 and 16, people are gearing up for what could be one of the longest holiday weekends of the year.
