Entry Curbs in Murree Amid Security Concerns

Authorities in Murree have announced strict security measures ahead of Independence Day celebrations, imposing Section 144 for three days to prevent overcrowding and maintain order.

Deputy Commissioner Agha Zaheer Abbas Shirazi said the restrictions will be enforced from 12 to 14 August 2025. During this period, access to Mall Road and GPO Chowk — two of the town’s most popular public areas — will be restricted to families only.

The decision follows recommendations from the District Intelligence Committee, which in a meeting on 30 July highlighted the risk of massive crowds and possible disorder during the four-day holiday period. Officials expressed concerns over both security threats and the logistical challenges of managing large gatherings.

Murree, located about 60 kilometres from Islamabad, is most visited hill station and draws thousands of tourists during public holidays. In the past, its limited infrastructure has struggled to cope with heavy influxes, leading to traffic gridlock and overcrowding.

Authorities have warned that anyone violating the order will face immediate legal action under Section 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code. A significant deployment of police and security personnel will be in place to enforce the measures.

Memories remain fresh of the January 2022 tragedy, when 23 tourists lost their lives during a snowstorm after being trapped in their vehicles amid record snowfall. The incident had prompted calls for better crowd and traffic management in the hill resort.
