Govt Launches Census to Fix Power Billing Flaws

The Pakistani government has launched a countrywide digital survey aimed at overhauling electricity billing systems under its broader “Electric City Plan”.

As part of the initiative, all electricity distribution companies — including Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) — have been instructed to conduct door-to-door surveys. These will be carried out by independent third-party agencies to ensure transparency and data accuracy.

The census will collect vital consumer information such as CNIC numbers, the number of meters installed at each location, and whether the power connection is registered under the owner’s or tenant’s name.

Authorities will also gather mobile numbers to improve communication and confirm which tariff category applies to each connection.

Officials believe this effort will help resolve recurring issues like inaccurate bills, unauthorized electricity use, and outdated customer records. By creating a centralized digital database, the government hopes to improve policy decisions and service delivery.
