ICC Explains Brief Exit of Rohit and Kohli from ODI Rankings

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has clarified why Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli temporarily vanished from the ODI batting rankings this week.

Cricket fans around the world were left puzzled on Wednesday when both players, considered modern greats of the format, were missing from the updated list.

The omission immediately fuelled speculation on social media, with some questioning whether the two had decided to step away from one-day cricket.

The international cricket authority later confirmed the removal was accidental, caused by what it described as a “technical issue” in the latest update.

Officials said other inconsistencies were also being reviewed. Both players were swiftly restored to their positions, with Sharma placed second and Kohli fourth.

The pair last played ODI cricket during the 2025 Champions Trophy in Dubai, where they helped India secure their first ICC 50-over title in 12 years.

Sharma scored a match-winning 76 in the final against New Zealand, while Kohli finished as India’s second-highest run scorer in the tournament.

Both have already stepped away from T20I and Tests, but remain committed to ODIs. India’s next challenge will be a ODI series against Australia in October , where the two are expected to feature.
