Pakistan Approves Single-Point Power Supply for CPEC Zones

The government has given the green light for industrial units in Special Economic Zones (SEZs) under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to receive electricity through a single-point supply.

Under the new system, industries will handle their own power distribution and billing. This change removes the direct role of distribution companies (DISCOs) in the internal supply process, a step aimed at ensuring faster connections and increasing electricity sales.

The Ministry of Energy has told all DISCOs to work directly with the administrations of the respective SEZs. According to a Power Division spokesperson, the arrangement is designed to eliminate delays and prevent unnecessary involvement of field staff.

The spokesperson added that this move could help reduce corruption and stop practices that have previously caused interruptions in the supply of electricity to industrial consumers.

The Power Division had sent a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) on 25 February for approval of the single-point supply arrangement.

Nepra later instructed, on 11 August, that final agreements should be signed with SEZs after completing necessary consultations.
