Punjab to Crack Down on Absentee Teachers Running Academies

The Punjab School Education Department has moved to tighten oversight of its teaching staff after reports surfaced that some government schoolteachers were skipping duty to work in private academies.

Officials said a formal notice has been issued to school heads, directing them to keep strict checks on attendance and staff movement. Some teachers, they added, have set up private coaching centres, running classes during official school hours, which violates service rules.

The department warned that this practice not only breaches regulations but also raises ethical concerns. Teachers allegedly favour students enrolled in their academies, leaving those in public schools at a disadvantage.

Under the new directive, principals must maintain detailed records of staff attendance and verify their presence on and off campus. Any negligence could also bring penalties for school heads and district education officials.

Authorities confirmed that disciplinary action will be taken against teachers found running or teaching at private academies during duty hours.

The department said the crackdown aims to ensure teachers remain committed to their official responsibilities and improve the standard of education in public institutions.
