Smoke-Emitting Cars to Face Ban in Islamabad

In a bid to improve air quality, Islamabad’s local administration has extended its anti-pollution campaign from brick kilns to smoke-emitting vehicles.

Officials have set up three locations across the city where vehicle owners can get free emissions testing until August 31. The service is available at Old Parade Ground, F-9 Park, and the Excise Office, and began on July 15.

Authorities have confirmed that vehicles manufactured in 2021 or later are temporarily exempt from inspection. After the deadline, however, cars emitting visible smoke will be barred from entering the capital and will face hefty fines.

This initiative aims to encourage environmentally responsible practices and reduce harmful pollutants. Officials say testing equipment at the centers meets global standards, and both private and commercial vehicles are being checked.

A special barcode sticker is issued to vehicles that pass the emissions test, serving as proof of compliance. So far, over 2,700 vehicles have been inspected, with the vast majority—2,665—meeting the required environmental standards.

City residents have generally welcomed the move, with many urging authorities to expand the number of testing centers to reduce long queues and waiting times.

From September 1, the free testing phase will end, and enforcement will begin in full, with violators likely to face significant penalties for non-compliance.
